The last Parent Power School of the year focused on the state budget fight and the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. It was held at UFT Brooklyn and about 40 parent leaders attended.

Parent Power School- Sept 20, 2014

The fourth installment of Parent Power School focused on learning about great parent engagement models across the country and was held at Transit Workers Union in downtown Brooklyn. Over 60 parents attended our Parent Power School on Sept 20th!

Parent Power School- July 26, 2014

The third installment of Parent Power School focused on expanding our knowledge about community schools and was held at Trinity Church Staff Offices in downtown Manhattan. Over 70 parents attended our Parent Power School on July 26th!  We covered such topics as:

  • Understanding a parent’s role in community schools and how to build relationships of equal power between schools, families and community partners
  • Public speaking: How to craft stories that will move people to act.

Parent Conferences with the Department of Education

The New York City Coalition for Educational Justice in partnership with the NYC Department of Education held three amazing parent conferences on May 3rd; May 31st and June 7th. Over 750 parents attended workshops and connected with fellow parent leaders.  Photos from the conferences can be found here.  Workshops included topics such as increasing parent participation and creating community schools through partnerships. In an unprecedented collaboration, CEJ parents were involved in the planning every aspect of the conference as well as co-facilitating all of the workshops with Department of Education staff. This was a great first step in creating a sustainable district-family partnership to strengthen schools and raise student achievement. Below you will find some of the resources from the conferences:

Parent Power School- March 2014

The March 29th Parent Power School was focused on community schools and ending the school-to-prison pipeline and was held at Professional Staff Congress at 61 Broadway. Over 70 parent leaders attended.
