The seven-foot, blue-eyed beaver mascot in a red Jamaica High School sweatshirt bobbed his head above teachers and parents chanting, “Whose schools? Our schools!”

Above them, a 12-foot-high JumboTron screen, set up outside Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene, broadcast rock-music video montages of past protests to a crowd of hundreds.

Students blew whistles, rang cowbells and shouted, “Save our schools.” Christopher Martinez, 16, held up a sign with the words “Egypt is N.Y.,” in a nod to the continuing pro-democracy protests there. “We want to show that our voices can be heard here, too,” he said. Continue reading

Tumultuous six-hour meeting ends with panel’s decision to close 12 public schools

A panel voted to close 12 struggling schools early Friday morning after a tumultuous six hour meeting disrupted by a raucous crowd of angry protestors.

More than half the 2,000 parents, teachers and students at Brooklyn Tech High School in Fort Greene chanted, booed and banged drums early in the explosive meeting, halting proceedings for 30 minutes. Continue reading

They stood and formed a human blockade on Chambers Street Monday evening. The chant could be heard from down the block.

“Save our schools!” They yelled.

Se oponen al cierre de escuelas en NY

“¡Salven nuestras escuelas!” Este grito se escuchó ayer en la tarde por toda la calle Chambers en Manhattan, que fue cerrada durante un tiempo mientras cientos de estudiantes, padres y maestros de escuelas protestaban el posible cierre de 26 escuelas.
